COVID crisis and Serbian SMEs: Impact assessment and overview of future scenarios

Grafikoni konkurentnosti realnog sektora Srbije

World Bank

Year: 2020

This study focuses on the impact that the COVID crisis has had so far on the Serbian MSME sector. The objective is twofold: to shed light on the needs of MSMEs as a distinct and very important segment of the economy, as well as to develop a useful segmentation, grouping them by sectors and size, in order to enable the development of targeted policies necessary for their progress. This is an important issue, as MSMEs play a huge role in the Serbian economy. As elsewhere, they are key to generating employment, and have also become an important generator of innovation and ICT and other new technology businesses. However, in Serbia, they also constitute the bulk of the domestically owned economy, are an important generator of production knowledge, skills and jobs, and are highly integrated into the regional and international economy.
