Understanding Belgrade's Service Sector: A Report Based on Survey Results

Grafikoni konkurentnosti realnog sektora Srbije

Partner: Open Society Fund

Year: 2007

This research aims to understand and describe the new service sector in Serbia. In the global economy, financial capital is increasingly directed towards countries rich in knowledge and skills. Knowledge drives economic growth and development in every region of the world. Rapid development in information and communication technology (ICT) creates opportunities for developing countries to accelerate their progress or even move to the next stage of development, enabling their integration into the global economy. The „new“ service sector, particularly knowledge-based services, has been rapidly developing in Serbia over the past few years. Research by FREN and CEVES indicates a significant gap in understanding the new service sector in Serbia. A detailed and rigorous study of the service sector in Belgrade – taking into account a large part of the new service sector in Serbia – assesses the structure, dimensions, key development factors, and development potential of the service sector in Serbia. To seize the opportunity and transform Serbia into a knowledge economy, carefully designed policies are needed to improve human capital and develop appropriate infrastructure. This research provides policymakers and businesses with the consistent information needed to build on Serbia's strengths and remove obstacles.
