The Centre for Advanced Economic Studies presented a study titled „Barriers to Youth Entrepreneurship in Serbia“ on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at a panel discussion organized at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia.
The topic was opened by the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia, Marko Čadež, H.E. the German Ambassador to Serbia, Axel Dittmann, Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Ana Brnabić, and President of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Advanced Economic Studies, Kori Udovički.
Marko Čadež emphasized that entrepreneurship is one of the best therapies for unemployment, and that the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia continuously works on activities aimed at encouraging and supporting business start-ups, and that through the established Council for Youth Entrepreneurship, they have become recognized as a place where young people needing such support meet.
H.E. the German Ambassador to Serbia, Axel Dittmann, said that one of the main goals when initiating German-Serbian cooperation was to work together on establishing conditions for education and improving the legislative framework to foster economic growth. The Ambassador also noted that youth unemployment is an important segment that must be addressed because young people are the most dynamic and have the greatest potential for driving economic growth.
Ana Brnabić, Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, stated that Serbia, through the first, and now the second phase of public administration optimization, has managed to save over EUR 100 million, solely from employee salaries. Furthermore, the Government of the Republic of Serbia, through the established ministerial IT council, is actively working on introducing new technologies through both formal and informal education. The IT council, guided by the principle that Serbia has quality as a comparative advantage, has adopted a realistic action plan for 2017, which is already in the implementation phase.
Kori Udovički, President of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Advanced Economic Studies, highlighted that the main challenges for young entrepreneurs in Serbia are microfinance and online payments. Additionally, the legal framework is such that in an effort to prevent certain abuses, we take the easier path – which is to prevent everything. In the coming period, according to Ms. Udovički, we must pave the way, encourage, and support the entrepreneurship of young people, as well as try to reduce the formal requirements imposed on them.
Following the introductory presentations, CEVES Program Director Danijela Bobić presented the main conclusions of the study „Barriers to Youth Entrepreneurship in Serbia,“ which focuses on the institutional and legislative problems faced by young people when starting their businesses.
